Driftwood Stays, A Look Into Two Fabulous Eco-Friendly Holiday Homes

We are delighted to now have both sustainable holiday lets on the Earthstays website. Having just attained our certification from Sustonica for both Driftwood Corner and Little Driftwood, the next logical step seemed to be to align ourselves with a platform that is actively promoting sustainable stays.

So who are we? We are Mark and Anna Seager. Husband and wife team who live in the seaside village of East Preston in West Sussex on the South Coast of England, where we run our holiday rental business from home. Driftwood Corner is a family focused property that can sleep up to 8 in 4 bedrooms and Little Driftwood is the prefect seaside bolthole for 2! We live right around the corner, so are on hand for our guests as much, or as little they need. Both houses are dog friendly , have private parking with EV charging and are a few steps away from the beach. We are blessed in that they are situated in a quiet beachside location, yet only a few minutes walk from a vibrant village, with all the amenities you need such as shops, pubs and cafes. Many of our guests turn up for their stay, park the car and don’t get back in it, until the day they leave. The Coastliner bus route within 10 minutes walk, the train station 20 minutes away and Gatwick airport a 45 minute train ride away, you could come and stay and not bring the car at all, as did one Norwegian group last summer.

Sustonica validates properties across 10 different categories and we were happy to learn we had scored well in each and every one. With regards to energy usage, both houses have LED light bulbs throughout, double glazing, are extremely well insulated with smart thermostats and all appliances have energy efficient with eco options.

Offering bio-degradable cleaning products, eco-friendly toiletries and recycled paper products was another area we highly scored in. Our toiletries and dishwasher soap come in refillable 100% recycled plastic bottles and the kitchen towelled toilet paper are 100% recycled. We also do not supply new rolls for each new set of guests. This is a conscious decision to reduce waste.

With regards to recycling, we have clear instructions and multiple options to recycle waste. This year, we also began working with a local food charity that helps around 50 families living in the surrounding villages. Guests who don’t want to take unused food items home for whatever reason, can leave it in the crate supplied. We then rake it to the local charity for them to distribute, as they see fit.

Our website is 100% hosted green and our guide books are digital. This is both easier for us to keep them up to date and better for our guests, as they are always to hand , on their phone. We can easily tell them about local businesses and events that they can get involved in, which allows them to support local and to live like a local whilst staying with us.

Whilst we endeavour to reduce our impact on the planet as much as we can, we recognise we can’t run our business without producing some CO2, the main one being heat/light and power for our guests! So, we calculate out carbon footprint annually and offset that by supporting local green projects, such as planting trees.

I would like to thank Anna for this guest blog post, to find out more about Driftwood Stay, visit their website at driftwoodstays.co.uk
