Description

Badger Cottage, in the heart of Suffolk yet only 20mins from coastal towns of Aldeburgh & Southwold, offers a unique blend of rustic charm, mod cons & quirky facilities.

Totally self-contained – yet guests are only steps away from a quiet village real ale pub & a tiny eco campsite with ducks & chickens, a campfire & quirky facilities including pizza oven and jungle shower.

This converted 200-year-old red brick stable is perfect for couples, friends and families. Two totally separate galleried bedrooms (accessed via separate staircases) allow guests in the master bedroom to relax and enjoy the living room without disturbing those in the guest (twin) bedroom.

The cottage is insulated to keep it pleasantly cool in the summer and toasty in the winter. A wood-fired range in the main pub building not only keeps the cottage’s radiators hot throughout the colder months but also provides an abundance of piping hot water on tap for deep soaks in the roll-top bath. A stand-alone woodburner in the cottage’s living room provides top-up heat and allows guests to enjoy the decadence of a real fire. During summer months the cottage’s hot water is supplied by a solar powered system (with an electric back-up for less sunny days).

The cottage has a country farmhouse style kitchen and eating area, as well as a spacious bathroom with a beautiful original Victorian roll-top bath and shower over. The double doors give access to a small private courtyard surrounded by woven hazel fencing, with a table and chairs for sitting or eating outside. A small area beside the woodburner allows you to store and dry muddy or wet boots and coats – making it the perfect base for exploring the many wonderful footpaths and guided walks in the area. At night, snuggle up in the sumptuous beds up in the loft – the double bedroom has a beautiful double bed with an extra deep mattress and feather quilt. The second bedroom has twin pine beds with very comfortable mattresses and a small double sofabed tucked away as an alternative to the twin beds.

Badger Cottage has been lovingly restored by Marie & Mark (with a little help from their friends!) to create a low-impact holiday cottage. Renovations were done using environmentally friendly paints and other natural building materials such as lime, and re-using reclaimed materials as far as possible. Most of the furniture and fittings are either recycled, hand-made from reclaimed materials or sourced locally. Solar panels heat the water for the bath, and all lights have low energy light bulbs – and a lovely big water butt takes rain from the roof to water the plants.

Badger Cottage’s Eco Message..

It was our aim for the cottage to promote recycling as a way of life – not just a way of disposing of waste – and to introduce the idea that reclaim doesn’t always mean a compromise on quality. Hence:

  • The lovely bed in the master bedroom has been handmade from reclaimed wood, as have the bedside tables.
  • Refurbishments were also done using reclaimed materials as far as possible – the kitchen was from a classified ad and the     quarry tiles and Victorian bath were from Freegle.
  • The balustrade in the guest bedroom was handmade from reclaimed wood (some Vietnamese teak which had been used for transportation and was destined for the bonfire).
  • Nearly all the paint in the cottage is eco paint bought from Earth & Reed – an eco building materials shop in West Suffolk.
  • The woodburner, wood-fired central heating and solar panels provide renewable alternatives to ‘traditional’ heating methods. Electricity is also from a renewable source – being the 100% renewable energy tariff from Ecotricity, and we have our own solar PV panels to create electricity from the sun. Contrary to some opinions though, the use of renewable energy does not mean any less comfort. The solar hot water – for example – is heated by the same wood-fired source as the radiators in the winter, when the sun is less powerful. So you can always expecting piping hot water and nice toasty radiators!
